 Women's Rugby Second in Nation

Women's Rugby
The WSU Women’s Rugby Team, the Black Katts, placed second in the Division II National Championship.

The Winona State University Women’s Rugby Team, the Black Katts, placed second in the Division II National Championship May 11-12 in Stanford, Calif.

The Black Katts faced Shippensburg State University in their debut appearance in the semi-final round, winning 24-12. However, the Black Katts were defeated by Norwich University in the final round.

Along with the success of the WSU Black Katts getting to the National Division 2 final game at Stanford University, CA, some individual players have also received recognition at the highest level.

Kourtney Kavajecz, freshman, Roscoe, IL - our first ever USA representative - she made the national team! Kourtney has been invited to be part of the USA Under 20 (years) team to play in Denver, Colorado two weekends from now. The U20 team were to have originally played against the countries of Wales, Canada and England in separate games but were curtailed by head coaching changes.

Sheree Haslemore, senior at St. Mary's (SMU doesn’t have a rugby team), Gore, New Zealand - our first ever player to receive a tryout for the United States Collegiate All-Americans. Tryouts will occur after the aforementioned Denver tournament and games against other country/s will occur later in the summer.

Ashley Nelson, junior, Long Lake MN - of a less news worthy extent but would likely have been invited (according to national coach) to the USA Collegiate All American tryouts if not for an injury during our national final.
